How to be a Google Developer Student Club Lead?

--

So Hey everyone! Back to me, Vivy Junita. I just wanna share you my experience become a Google Developer Student Club Lead (yeay). If you dont know what is DSC, you can check on my medium story before(in Bahasa Indonesia)or https://developers.google.com/community/dsc

The story has begun when my lead was shared about open recruitment for the new leads for batch 2019. First, I felt like it was my chance to learn about tech. Second, I think I should be the agent of changes on my campus. As you know, many students still stuck about the lesson on campus and they don’t explore a lot of things that useful in tech companies/ startups. Finally, I decided to push myself and join the recruitment. I just trust myself that I can influence other friends or juniors to be active in exploring and join the competitions hehe.

Step One: Evaluation Round of DSC Application
we need to take a recommendation letter from campus and then you also need to take a motivation video like why you want to be the lead in your campus. You can see my video here. After that, you must fill the forms (make sure the video has been taken and you have your recommendation letter because it must be upload in forms). You can register on here.

Sekilas info soal video saya hehe

Fyi: It was 5 AM, I just wake up and felt like I just took the video. So random right:”)) Thanks to Bagus for your helping to edit the video and all of you that support me. You guys are amazing:”))

I remember the time as I felt dag dig dug because I know there’s a lot of wonderful students that can be a lead but back to the goals: I just need to push my friends to learn and update about the technologies from online courses, workshops, etc. If I cant be a lead, at least I’ve tried my best and help the new lead to arrange the workshops. But, God always gives us the best thing. Let God do the rest.

It’s 9 PM and I already slept HAHA. When the morning, I got an email and it made me “OHMAIGAT. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS. I PASSED THE FIRST STEP. Thank GOD”. I called my mom and dad to tell them about this and “minta doa restu”!:”))

Step Two: Online Interview
*tik tok tik tok*.
It was the interview day. I remember it was 8 PM and I just back to kost after the internship. Before the day, I prepared all of the things that can be asked the general things like what is DSC, Why you want to join DSC, and then what kind of things that you want to plan as DSC soon, etc. I searched in Google like the questions that can be asked (you can here on here) or the leads from any universities blog on medium.

The important thing that you must know is what kind of impact that you can contribute to your campus!

I just waiting for the announcement one month and taraaaaaaa

Step Three: Do the best what you can do for your DSC
It’s so wonderful. I never thought that it was true. It just the beginning of the journey. As you know, I always happy if there any communities that can share about the knowledge, experiences, or anything that you cant get from campus. I know to be an agent of change is not easy. For me, the challenges that I felt as DSC lead is I must think about time management. As a student, you must prepare yourself to do the thesis and doing the school projects but as a lead, you must think about what kind of things you can share with your friends.

With DSC, I just wanna push them to always learn and learn about something new and choose what the goals do you want to get (You must know what’s your dream job and focus on it). That’s why I created the blogs for you (you can check it on here) and make the groups that can share each other to share about competitions or get advice from the seniors.

Once again, to all of the participants, I wanna say Thank you for coming to the events. I know there’s no certificate, no food, no drinks, no bread, but hopefully, it can help you to know a lot of things in tech industries hehe.

DSC workshops
This is my DSC UB family. Thanks for you guys who always help our DSC activities. Love you all!

Fyi: Now I stay in Jakarta but I can still contribute and be the part of volunteer of GDG Jakarta and GDG Cloud. For me, that’s a wonderful opportunity because you can fill your weekend with a nice workshop and get more friends!

GDG Jakarta and GDG Cloud Jakarta events

So, Don’t forget to join us as DSC Leads 2020 especially for you students of Universitas Brawijaya (Lanjutkan PR saya ya hehe). you can check it on http://g.co/dev/dsc
